Projo Fishing: HotBytes |
Chuck Millard with his grandchildren, Charlotte and Nick aboard Can't Imagine. "Striper fishing has been hit-or-miss during the week," reports Ray Stachelek. "High winds and rough water have put a damper on much of the surface activity. The Bay is spotty with smaller baitfish. Some say they are Bay anchovies; my guess would be silversides or immature sea herring. Activity picks up with the moving tide. "We found a slug of stripers just south of Conimicut Light on Tuesday afternoon. Two stripers that hit the mid-teen mark fell for Clousers. Morning hours are by far the most consistent, but the bite quickly dies.So far the adult bunker schools have not moved into the upper Bay. Nils Christensen of Ultimate Kayak Fishing reports about a Sunday trip: "Billy Silvia took Chuck Millard and his two grandchildren, Nick and Charlotte, fishing for tautog. It was an absolutely horrible day due to the weather, but the two kids stuck it out. Charlotte caught her first fish ever today, which weighed in at 5 pounds, and she landed three others. Nick is turning into a young pro landing numerous tautog today. Kids had a great day and caught a lot of fish." "I witnessed my first cinder worm hatch in Bullock's Cove on Saturday morning," writes Pater Jannitto. "I was astonished at the magnitude of the spawn, as I have never once witnessed on in Bullock's Cove. I think it caught the bass by surprise as well because there were none to be seen, heard or caught; they missed an easy feast! Glad to see that there is such a variety of bait to keep the bass close and fat." Frank Blount, owner of the Frances Fleet writes: "The offshore trip this past weekend met with very good success. After a slow start, Capt. Mike traveled to a new area a bit farther down the road, and within seconds after the whistle was sounded, rods doubled over on nice size cod fish. Quality was the theme with the majority of the fish over 10 pounds and many fish in the mid teens to lower 20s. A few bigger hangers up to Mike Yanelski's pool winning 42-pound brute. Mike also had a fine 25-pound monkfish to go along with his catch of cod." On the freshwater scene, 13-year-old Chris Catucci reports: "I was fishing at Waterman Lake at about 10 a.m. and I hooked up to what turned out to be a 4-pound bass. I was fishing with a 5-inch Wacky Worm."
