David Porreca, the owner of River & Riptide Anglers in Coventry, is offering a series of fly-tying and fishing classes this winter.

Charter-boat skipper Bob Hines of Fly Fish Rhode Island will teach five classes on saltwater flies, and Porreca will teach the freshwater course.

Hines's will discuss saltwater patterns that catch striped bass, bluefish, and false albacore. His course will be geared toward beginner, intermediate, and advanced tiers. It starts Jan. 8 and runs for five weeks on Thursdays through Feb. 5.

Porreca's course will focus on seasons of the mayfly for New England trout streams. It will be geared toward beginner, intermediate, and advanced tiers, too. It will start on Feb. 12 and will run for five weeks on Thursdays through Mar. 12.

Class tuition is $75, and classes are limited to 10 tiers. Tools and materials will be provided. Both courses will cover tying and fishing techniques.

Classes will start at 6:30 p.m., and will run roughly for two-and-a-half hours at River & Riptide Anglers, 2435 Nooseneck Hill Rd. (Rte. 3) in Coventry. To register, call 392-1919.
