New Jersey fly fishers Ed Janiga, Rick Hettenbach, Art Rozell, Nate Peller and Frank Zadina Members of Coastal Fly Rodders of Northern New Jersey were looking for false albacore, but they found striped bass, scup and fluke instead during their annual day trip to Rhode Island yesterday. The action was at Watch Hill as bass blitzed schools of bay anchovies, said Frank Zadina, a Jersey charter boat skipper who belongs to the club. The club charters a coach to take them on day trips to Long Island, Connecticut (for trout) and Rhode Island. "We get on the bus at 3 a.m., go to sleep, and wake up in Rhode Island," said Art Rozell, another member of the group. In the Ocean State, they generally fish the West Wall Weekapaug and Watch Hill, said Art. Yesterday, the West Wall was dead, so they headed for Watch Hill where they found blitzing bass and scup. "Most of the fish were schoolies," said Frank, "but there were some slobs, too." "They were blitzing pretty good," said Rick Hettenbach. The most active bite was at low tide at midday.
