Big-eye bite

"Atlantis Canyon has one of the best runs of big-eye tuna we've seen in years," said Al Conti of Snug Harbor Marina this morning. "We seen them up to 250 pounds with some 50- to 80-pound yellowfin mixed in.

"Several boats have been catching them. They're taking the big-eye trolling at first light in the morning or dusk in the evening. Overnight chunking is the way they're taking the yellowfin."

The mahi-mahi that had been close to shore seem to have disappeared, Conti said, but football-sized bluefin generally start to appear on Labor Day weekend if they do come at all.

Went out to the mud hole trolling last Sunday. We had one fish on the whole day. Believe it or not it was a small mahi-mahi. The fish was caught on an artificial squid. The water temperature was 69 degrees.
