While most Rhode Island anglers were jamming themselves into tight spots on the state's stocked trout ponds, Jonathan Cornwell of East Matunuck had the West Wall in Jerusalem to himself this morning. "The schoolies come in dribs and drabs," he said, casting toward the channel into Point Judith Pond. Jonathan hadn't caught anything by the time he left around 7:20 a.m., but he said that some other fishermen had caught 12-inch schoolies on Friday. He was fishing a bullet-head bucktail jig with a pork rind. Bob Neilson of Wildwood Outfitters recommends Cocahoe Minnows or similar paddle-tail soft plastic lures. Before sunrise today, Jim White, the author of How To Fish Plastic Baits in Saltwater spent about a half hour at Quaker Lane Outfitters talking about the merits of RonZ Engineered Baits. They were really hot on Block Island last summer, and White predicts the lures will catch fire with fishermen on the mainland this season. He recommends the chartreuse and pink models. In hind sight, I wish I had talked to Bob about the Cocahoe Minnows prior to my being skunked!
