When Ed McGovern phoned from Joe Scichilone's boat late yesterday morning, they had hooked eight bass between 20 and 40 punds apiece. Four of the fish had come aboard as double hook-ups. "We had to take turns landing them," Ed said.
They were aboard Joe's boat, Straight Shooter, on a reef off Point Judith.
Chris willi of Block Island Fishworks writes:
"Sea bass have moved in for all the folks fishing the bottom, as well as some good sized fluke out in deep water off Clay Head and the west beaches.
"Southwest Ledge was excellent for bass provided you could get past the blues. We did this with heavy jig heads on big Ron-zs or Sluggos, and had fish between 25 and 35 pounds.
"Bonito have been spotty but are around the channel and Charlestown Beach. You have to be at the right place at the right time, but the grand slam from the shore is possible now.
"Went offshore again on the Island Lady , Thursday and Friday, and tallied four yellowfin tuna, 50 to 70 pounds and one albacore, trolling. We were lucky enough to release yet another swordfish while chunking at night. Unbelievable conditions. Fished the Dip to the Tails."
