Tuna fishing is hot.

Chris Willi of Block Island Fishworks sent this message Sunday at 11:15 p.m.

"I was once again invited to fish the Island Lady, a 32-foot Cabo out of New Harbor. Capt. Joe Noel had plans to head back to Atlantis and fish the excellent temperature break reported there and stay overnight. But 40 miles into the journey, at around 10 a.m., we ran across some slicks and birds and decided to drop the lines in for a quick try.

"Seven minutes of trolling and we had three yellowfin on, and boated two. We fished the area for four hours and tallied 16 yellowfin up to 60 pounds. Kept a few for a big cookout on the island and headed home. But not after hitting a few flyers for mahi.

"Back at the dock at 7 p.m. - unbelievable day, perfect weather, fishing, and crew. Didn't see another boat until we picked up to leave. No other life except a couple whales in the distance. I'm sure we will be back out after the Tri State Tuna Tournament that starts tomorrow."

Sunday morning, after chasing around several schools of bluefish with fly rods at the mouth of Narragensett Bay, we moved over in front Newport to take advantage of the lee associated with the NW wind. After pursuing in vain what appeared to be an unusually well organized and fast moving school of blitzing bluefish, we quickly concluding that this school was actually hardtails of some sort. After about an hour of cat & mouse, we finally positioned ourselves in front of the school and were at the ready with our fly rods the next time the school crashed the surface. We were rewarded with a 26 inch skipjack tuna that really stressed out my 9 weight rod and took nearly a half hour to land, taking me a couple of hundred yards into the backing several times before surrendering.

Friady, August 4th, went out into Newport Harbor near point at Fort Adams and blue fish were blitzing when we got out a 7:00 p,m, and stayed until dark. We landed a few about 24" long. Then after dark, we went north of Newport Bridge, and went deep looking for bass while using live eels. No bass to be had anywhere, but got some even bigger blues there down deep. I am doing something wrong, because I can't seem to catch a bass this year. Just got a fishfinder, so maybe that can help?
