Just returned from Watch Hill Outfitters, Fred DeGrooth's new store on Main Street in Westerly. It's a beautiful little shop with a nice mix of fly-fishing and surf-casting gear, including Fred's own line of Reflex Rods.
The big news at the store is fluke fishing. "It's the best fluking of the season," Fred said. "I've weighed fish between 6 and 9 pounds this week. They're still feeding on peanut bunker, but occasionally, they'll take squid."
Surf fishing is relatively slow, he said, but fly fishermen are still taking bass in Quonny Pond with sand-eel patterns. They're catching larger bass on the reefs, casting 250- to 300-grain sinking lines with peanut bunker patterns.
