In the waters off Providence Point this morning, there were three boats and thousands of striped bass.

I was taking photos of David Henault of Ocean State Tackle and Jeff Soriano as they fished aboard Billy Silvia’s charter boat, Can’t Imagine. They were fishing with Black Salty minnows, a new baitfish that Silvia plans to distribute to bait shops in Rhode Island. It’s a freshwater fish, but it will live for about two hours in salt water. There will be more about Silvia’s venture in The Providence Journal and on projo.com.

The bass were feeding on mantis shrimp, Silvia said, but they eagerly attacked the Black Salty minnows right at the boat. “This ain’t fair,” said Henault, hooking a striper on almost every cast.

The stripers weren’t large, but they were numerous and ferocious.

An anonymous fisherman sent an e-mail to say: “The trout fishing at Lincoln Woods has been awesome. The best I have seen in years. Around the beach at dusk using minnows seems to be the trick this year.”
